Kleinwalsertal

The Kleinwalsertal is a V-shaped valley high up in the Allgäu Alps and is located in the north-east of Vorarlberg.

The Kleinwalsertal (also known as ‚kleines Walsertal) is a valley in the Federal State of Vorarlberg in Austria. It belongs to the administrative region Bregenz and encompasses the whole of the municipality Mittelberg, which in consequence is also called locally the municipality Kleinwalsertal. On account of its geographical location in the Allgäu Alps and the Alpine landscape, there is no direct road link from the Kleinwalsertal to the rest of Vorarlberg and Austria itself. You can only access the valley by using German roads or via Oberstdorf in Germany. This is why the valley is referred to as a so-called functional enclave.

The three main towns that are situated in the Kleinwalsertal are Mittelberg, Hirschegg and Riezlern, that together form one municipality. Its official name is Mittelberg in recognition of the fact that this was the first settlement. Another smaller town called Baad, that also belongs to Mittelberg, lies at the end of the valley.
