Excursions through Time and Space Natural Phenomena and Cultural Traces in the Forest and along the Elbe River – Hiking Week in KennersLandlust Kenny Kenner was just ten years old when he and his friend discovered a very old urn cemetry. They decided against playing games with the broken fragments. Instead they informed their teacher about their discovery. As a reward, the two boys were invited to help with the excavation work during the following two years. This was the initial spark for Kenny’s devotion to history. Be it in the natural or cultural field, he loves the topic up to this day. And he is only too willing to share this love with our guests during hiking excursions in the region. Let us take the LÖWE forest as an example, with its longterm ecological forest development programme initiated by the Lower Saxonian Forestry Department. Its goal is the gradual increase of mixed woodland and more sustainability. The Göhrde forest has been woodlands from time immemorial. It presents itself in an incredible variety of landscapes, forest clearances uniquely with beech trees, chestnut avenues that were originally planted for the emperor, spruce forests for the production of wood as well as forests in different regenerational stages. All this and a good deal more is to be discovered in these imperial hunting forests. Whoever had a chance to pay a visit to the “Breeser Grund” can now vividly imagine what forest pastures and heath landscapes were like in the Middle Ages. There are other forest spots where traces of human settlements can still be found. One of them is Wieckaukuhle, a former settlement site that has not been inhabited for centuries. Listening to Kenny Kenner’s stories is like going back in time and becoming part of the lives of the former inhabitants of this area. In close vicinity is the riverbed of the Elbe. From the panoramic path on its bank you can enjoy the wonderful view of the “mother of German rivers”. The Elbe conveys an atmosphere of enormous space and at the same time radiates peace and tranquillity, a feeling to treasure and take back home with you to your everyday life. With the help of Kenny Kenner you will get to know all these sites. There are three hiking excursions on our programme, two half-day ones and one for a whole day. With a bit of luck you might meet some of the gentle cohabitants of our earth such as the deer and moufflons or at least spot their tracks. The white-tailed eagle has returned to the area and is seen circling the sky. Beavers are busily chewing wood. Please ask us for information on further walking-tours in the area if you prefer hiking without a guide.
