Lower Rhine in Deutschland

The Lower Rhine is a countryside full of contrasts and peculiarities, and it brings together extremes: seemingly endless plains leading to unmistakable ranges of hills. In between, villages and towns with a wealth of life and culture.

Numerous old water courses indicate where the river Rhine used to flow, and it has left behind many winding side-streams that are now maintained as eco-habitats for rare plants and animals. Alongside the river are deep valleys, wild mountain streams and little rivers, as well as the reservoirs curling away like fjords – silent refuges or places alive with water-sports enthusiasts.

And in between, villages and towns redolent of history and culture: from the Roman town Xanten to the industrial Duisburg-Meiderich, from the museum island Hombroich to the medieval carved altars in Kalkar.
