Waldviertel in Österreich

The Waldviertel in Austria, literally the ‚Forest Quarter’, is a region full of mysticism. A region for short visits or longer holidays that will satisfy the body, mind and soul. Because you only genuinely restored to health and true wellbeing when everything around you is in harmony - the countryside and its people, the food and the sport and health-promoting facilities.

The winter in the forest region has its own special charm. Snow and ice transform nature into a fairytale landscape. The region scores points for its tranquillity and natural calm, cross-country skiing, its ideal conditions for winter walkers, and its many events.

Snow-shoe walking in the Thaya valley, trips through the snow-covered countryside on the narrow gauge steam railway or by horse-drawn carriage promise unadulterated romanticism. Wrapped in a thick blanket, this is the way to enjoy the winter sun.

In summer, the Waldviertel is transformed into a haven for golfers, cyclists, the health conscious, and visitors to castles and
fortresses.

But Waldviertel in Lower Austria is full of secrets too: standing stones steeped in legend, mysterious moors, mystical cult sites and caves are just some of its special places. For the most part, the paths go through level or slightly hilly terrain.

You can experience the wine region with all your senses when, for example, you walk through the unique valley of the river Thaya on the border with the Czech Republic. In this landscape you can watch green lizards, listen to the twittering of a good 100 types of bird and simply enjoy magical nature. Guided theme walks are available at all times.

Another highlight is a trip to the ‚Druids Meeting Place’ in the Ysper-Weiten Valley, a mysterious stone circle that is said to radiate extraordinary power. Following easily manageable paths and bridges, the two-hour walk takes you through the Ysper gorge where the rushing water plunges into the depths. Today, cultural events take place in the many castles, fortresses and monasteries in the region. The international chamber music festival ,Allegro Vivo’, the operettas in Haindorf castle and the art and antiques fair ‚Ars Weitra’ are events that benefit from this ambience. And Waldviertel has culinary delights to offer too, as you will discover if you call in for a drink of this year’s new wine.
