The Waldviertel in Austria, literally the ‚Forest Quarter’, is a region full of mysticism. A region for short visits or longer holidays that will satisfy the body, mind and soul. But Waldviertel in Lower Austria is full of secrets too: standing stones steeped in legend, mysterious moors, mystical cult sites and caves are just some of its special places. For the most part, the paths go through level or slightly hilly terrain.

You can experience the wine region with all your senses when, for example, you walk through the unique valley of the river Thaya on the border with the Czech Republic. In this landscape you can watch green lizards, listen to the twittering of a good 100 types of bird and simply enjoy magical nature. Guided theme walks are available at all times.

Another highlight is a trip to the ‚Druids Meeting Place’ in the Ysper-Weiten Valley, a mysterious stone circle that is said to radiate extraordinary power. Following easily manageable paths and bridges, the two-hour walk takes you through the Ysper gorge where the rushing water plunges into the depths. Today, cultural events take place in the many castles, fortresses and monasteries in the region. The international chamber music festival ,Allegro Vivo’, the operettas in Haindorf castle and the art and antiques fair ‚Ars Weitra’ are events that benefit from this ambience.
